Serving Others: Giving Your Time, Transforming Your Faith
In a world that often prioritizes self-fulfillment, personal success, and individual goals, it’s easy to forget that one of the most powerful ways to grow in faith is by serving others. Jesus himself set the ultimate example of servant-hearted living, showing us that true fulfillment is found in humility and love for others. He reminds us in Matthew 20:26-28, "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." When we give our time to serve, we not only make an impact on those around us—we also experience deep transformation in our own spiritual lives.

1. Serving Shifts Our Focus from Self to Others
Life can quickly become centered around our own plans, struggles, and ambitions. But when we step outside of ourselves to serve others, we begin to see the world through a different lens. Philippians 2:3-4 reminds us, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Serving helps us live out this scripture by teaching us to pay attention to the needs of others and reflect Christ’s love in tangible ways.
2. Serving Strengthens Our Faith and Trust in God
When we step out in faith to serve, we often find ourselves in situations where we need to rely on God’s strength rather than our own. Whether it’s leading a Bible study, mentoring someone younger, or volunteering at a local nonprofit, serving stretches us outside of our comfort zones. As we give our time and energy, we see God show up in unexpected ways, building our trust in Him and deepening our relationship with Him.
3. Serving Builds Meaningful Community
Serving alongside others creates deep and lasting relationships. When we work together toward a shared mission—whether it’s helping at a church event, serving meals to those in need, or mentoring young adults—we build connections that are rooted in faith and purpose. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” The friendships formed through serving often become a source of encouragement, accountability, and spiritual growth.
